There are Three Design Styles in the Federation:
"Stand Up" or the "Tall ship"
"Laydown"
And The" Single Hull Ships"
Intrepid is the absolute BEST of the "Lay Down" Styles of Federation Ships. "The Stand Up" Style or "Tall Ships" like Constitution, Galaxy Ambassador and Excelsior were extremely easy to make look good. It's all a question of line of sight arrangement.
In my opinion Intrepid is the ONLY Good looking Laydown Style.
Sovereign's entire underside is extremely awkward and square-ish. A completely different look from the smooth aerodynamic look of the top side.
Prometheus is just the worse hands down (lots of potential though if redone)
Luna class is pretty decent but no beauty.
Nova is just a no no...Not a pretty ship. |

Some ships may lok akward or out of place however remember this. its not always who has the prettiest ships. if tht was the case then war or battle as we know it would be completely different XD
sometimes you have to sacrifice a sleek design for better combat or defence.
adding to the auro dynamics. there are bo aero dynamics in space i am sure its clear however how is the underside to the soveriegn square I dont remember a block hanging off the soveriegn. even if it did it would be like that for a reason. mayhaps the big block has a secret experimental weapon =p. in all cases something must be givin to be gained. some ships have to lose speed to gain power. and some have to lose power to gain defense. I ended up making 2 lol but anyways I hope this is usefull =] |
Saquist From: (Houston Texas) Joined: September 18th, 2003 Posts: 1811 | Sovereign and Prometheus are the worse designed ships of Trek from a combat point of view. Both ships have huge gaps in the phaser coverage (Sovereign was modified to correct some of them) Promethus has so many problems it's truly ridiculous. No fuel storage, no torp tubes, no sensors on the stardrive sections, shuttle bay sitting on the docking plane, no core hatches, etc, etc.etc.
Voyager was a work of art and a work of function.
It was well detailed and it's lines were blended extremely well.
Sovereign was trying to be a work of art. And while the top has some pleasing angle the bottom of the saucer is arranged in raised concentric steps that make it look blockish. Even the deflector is given a square backing and the triangle on the bottom is shortens the look of the ship making it look stubby.
Additional: There are aerodynamics in space. It's not a true vacuum. When traveling at thousands of time the speed of light the gas in the interstellar medium would cause ships to meet a shock front of gasses as they pass through. But even without that we know there is temporal dynamic to the shape of Voyager to reduce it's drag on space time. |

Can't really point out any flaws in the image. Nice recreation. |

I guess CGI crew threw it together for small screen - single episode purpose, thus the lack of logic in the design and lack of detailing... too bad, not that I like Prometheus design anyway
Picture is soo lovely, maybe because blue calms me down, great angle on the Voyager, great lighting, looks even better tahn actual scene from 'Timeless' 10/10 |
