MajorPayne From: Joined: July 25th, 2002 Posts: 949 | I've always wondered how Filefront managed to get around the distribution rights with files and such considering the amount they charge. I'm certain that it breaks some sort of copyright which no-ones tried challenging. Still I supposed it would be claimed as being necessary to "help run the site". Strange that if thats the case then why all the popups and advertising. You dont' see other independant sites charging for file distribution on cd/dvd. Okay so not many actually do it, but let me check my maths: From my own experience of sending a cd overseas, it didn't cost any more than about 90p and the cost of the jiffy bag was about 50p. First class stamp is about 32p and the cover for the cd was less than 10p, so there has to be something fishy going on somewhere here.
But then like I said, no-ones ever challenged it. |

These DVD's contain DEMO's made by companies and its all above board. If you don't want a DVD then don't buy one. |
MajorPayne From: Joined: July 25th, 2002 Posts: 949 | Oh my appologies FT. I didn't realise that Filefront had changed its policy,. |
AngryAmoeba From: (New Hampshire) Joined: September 10th, 2003 Posts: 1219 | Uhhh, dude, FileFront is doing nothing illegal, they're just offering an easier way for those who aren't fortunate enough to have a fast inernet connection to download larger files and game demos, which are created by the game companies for free download. |
Big_Daddy (V.I.P. Member) From: Joined: August 15th, 2003 Posts: 1176 | FileFront never made any money off selling those files on CD anyways. All the proceeds went into the cd and shipping. Non-profit so to speak. |
Mido Joined: December 10th, 2004 Posts: 64 | Every time a game is updated to a new version, all the old demos don't work.
I will laugh when someone actually gets a demo DVD, and then the game updates and they can't watch any of the demos anymore. |
falcon93 From: (california) Joined: January 23rd, 2005 Posts: 623 | they dont update the demos that much only the multiplayer ones are updated most. and most of the time the updates are because the slopped the demo together in a couple of days. |
tekagi Joined: April 20th, 2004 Posts: 104 | OMG more great modding news (MUST READ!) ...... awww is that all what a con lol |
Deathbyteacup (V.I.P. Member) From: (Manchester) Joined: December 15th, 2002 Posts: 1411 | #16 - Demo's get updated now do they?...
#18 - That isn't the title of this news post. It clearly says what it is in the title. Sorry for "conning" you though.
Again, if you don't want a DVD then don't buy one. If you have a 56k modem and really want to get your hands on these demo's then feel free to order a disc. |
tekagi Joined: April 20th, 2004 Posts: 104 | OMG FileTrekker did you see the "lol" at the end which states I was joking? I said what i said because this is the DOW section where we all stare and wait for news about mod updates and then something completely different comes up. And I was joking geeeez lol |
dauntless Joined: December 15th, 2002 Posts: 623 | oh yeah, and what's the catch? it costs. a lot. |
Ronnie From: (Leiden) Joined: December 4th, 2002 Posts: 647 | Blank DVD's are not really that cheap. The content has to be written on the discs and they have to be shipped. All in all a reasonable price |
WhiteInferno Joined: June 24th, 2005 Posts: 83 | DVD's are awesome, as they can store more stuff, but you should have a CD service. Some people don't have DVD drives. Still, this is an awesome idea. And to number 16: File-Trekker is right. Besides, the point of getting the demo: To give you an Idea to either buy or not buy the game. Not just for you to use in place of the game. Plus, as file-trekker also mentioned (As well as number 17), Demo's DO NOT get updated. Usually. Finally, I'm sure you can do a 'Select demo's you want on this disk' thing. If not, i'm wrong. I mean no offense by this post. (this very, very, VERY long post.) |
jelliott50 From: (NSW) Joined: February 3rd, 2005 Posts: 2 | Are you Kidding peacewiz. "Blank DVD's are not really that cheap." I get them for 30 cents here in Australia so that's about 10p or 20cents US. If you can get a DVD for 20c US how come free demo's cost $15 US. That's a lot for shipping. Don't get me wrong before I got Broadband these deals were tempting but just plain too expensive. |
MajorPayne From: Joined: July 25th, 2002 Posts: 949 | Peacewiz. So if DVD blanks aren't that cheap then why can I buy a spool of 50 for £8.99 (aprox 17p per disc), and a box of 50 plain covers for about £2.99 (aprox 5p per cover). Postage via airmail to practically anywhere is no more than £1.50 at the very most. So I'm sorry but $15 (aprox £8.47 currently) for postage cost IS excessive (considering as well that the UK has probably one of the more expensive costings for postage), it wouldn't cost more than perhaps £3.00 (just over $5.30) and even that might be way over the actual cost. |
Pethegreat From: (Pittsburgh, PA) Joined: March 30th, 2004 Posts: 677 | Hey they are sending it via express mail, faster than dl'ing them all if you on 56k, 5 gb takes about 8 hours if your on 1.5mb, at lest 6 days on 56k |
Reven From: (Dunblane) Joined: November 30th, 2004 Posts: 187 | I'll stick with PC Gamer, who give you a packed double-sided DVD with 10GB of demos, mods, videos, patches, galleries and utilities plus a magazine for £6/$11. Plus a subscription works out at roughly £3/issue. |
Ronnie From: (Leiden) Joined: December 4th, 2002 Posts: 647 | You're thinking of 4.7 GB disks. |
Reven From: (Dunblane) Joined: November 30th, 2004 Posts: 187 | Yeah but it's double density double-sided, so you can actually have up to 19GB on it. |
